Questions to Ask Welding Vocational Programs

Questions to ask Nunapitchuk AK welding schoolsWhen you have decided on the credential you would like to earn, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to compare schools. As you can imagine, there are a large number of welder trade and technical schools in the Nunapitchuk AK area. That’s why it’s essential to decide up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have already covered two important ones that most people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the program you pick is going to provide the education that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So following are more factors you may want to consider before selecting a welder tech school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder vocational school you choose is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school offers, such as Welding Technology. So verify that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you receive an excellent education, the accreditation might also help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in Nunapitchuk AK for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or local governments that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. Numerous welder diploma or degree programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools must have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish associations within the Nunapitchuk AK welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an instructional program and finish it. It’s essential that the welding school you choose has a higher completion rate. A low rate could signify that the students who enrolled in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only verify that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Nunapitchuk AK employer relationships to assist students secure employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have limited your selection of welder schools to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should consider visiting the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Nunapitchuk AK welding contractor if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly covered the importance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should address. You should bear in mind that unless you have the ability to relocate, the welding school you choose must be within driving distance of your Nunapitchuk AK home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from moving costs there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will wish to work.

Small Classes. One-on-one training is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be lost in bigger classes and not obtain much individualized instruction. Find out what the average class size is for the welding programs you are reviewing. Ask if you can sit in on some classes so that you can observe how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their evaluations. Also, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Flexible Class Schedules. Some people learn a new trade while still employed at their present job. Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Nunapitchuk AK, make sure that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only enroll part-time, make sure that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family circumstances.

Online Welder Schools

Nunapitchuk AK student attending welding classes onlineWelding is very much a manual kind of profession, and therefore not very compatible with training online. Having said that, there are some online welding classes offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Nunapitchuk AK area that can count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses mainly cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a foundation to start their training and education. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials unless you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that want to advance their knowledge or perhaps earn a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely careful and confirm that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
