What to Ask Welding Tech Programs

Questions to ask Wofford Heights CA welding schoolsWhen you have decided on the credential you want to earn, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you can imagine, there are many welding trade and vocational schools in the Wofford Heights CA area. That’s why it’s necessary to decide in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already covered 2 important ones that many people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the program you choose is going to provide the education that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are more factors you may need to consider before choosing a welder vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder vocational school you choose is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 basic kinds of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you receive an excellent education, the accreditation might also help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available in Wofford Heights CA for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Numerous welding certificate or degree programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools must have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the Wofford Heights CA welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an instructional program and complete it. It’s essential that the welding program you select has a high completion rate. A lower rate might mean that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Wofford Heights CA employer relationships to help students secure employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. Once you have limited your selection of welding programs to two or three options, you should consider visiting the campuses to look over their facilities. Confirm that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be trained on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be working with on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Wofford Heights CA welding professional if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Although we already briefly discussed the importance of location, there are a few additional points that we need to deal with. You should remember that unless you have the ability to move, the welder program you pick needs to be within commuting distance of your Wofford Heights CA home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, besides relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welder diploma programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you subsequently will want to work.

Small Classes. Individualized instruction is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in larger classes and not obtain much one-on-one instruction. Find out what the typical class size is for the welding schools you are reviewing. Ask if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can experience just how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with a few of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, talk to some of the instructors and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Flexible Class Schedules. Many people learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Wofford Heights CA, confirm that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any because of illness, work or family circumstances.

Online Welder Training Programs

Wofford Heights CA student attending welding classes onlineWelding is very much a manual type of profession, and therefore not extremely suitable for online training. However, there are a few online welding classes offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Wofford Heights CA area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These courses primarily cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to start their training and education. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials unless you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that would like to advance their expertise or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and make sure that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
